John Theophilus Lee - the 1790's

from Memoirs of John Theophilus Lee, page 104:

The lights now being brought into the wardroom, some officers amused themselves by playing billiards on the rudderhead, while others sat down to a rubber of whist, all enjoying themselves one way or another, till bed time, - and the soft tones of a flute, played by one of the officers soothed all into harmony, and made him quite forget his malady in the joyous feelings to which it gave rise.
