One evening after a concert given by that Soviet rarity the Moscow Chamber Orchestra, the section leaders and I settled down for some informal music, including Schubert’s Quintet in C Major; and astonishingly these young players who were drilled beyond belief, who played with a perfection which was fantastic, proved untrained to sight-read.
