Alexander Mackenzie in London - 1883

from A Musician's Narrative , page 185:

The sixth concert of the first season introduced me to Tchaikowsky and Saint-Saƫns. The latter played his G Minor Concerto with brilliant effect, ending the programme with Le Route d'Omphale under his own direction. The impressions left were those of an unfailing perfection of pianoforte technique, combined with a dryness of expression and an inflexibility of beat, which in this case, however, fitted the rigid rhythm of the wheel.
