Igor Stravinksy in St. Petersburg - at the end of the 1800's

from Igor Stravinsky: An Autobiography, page 10:

Hans Richter, a much better-known and more celebrated conductor, whom I heard a little later when he came to St. Petersburg to conduct the Wagner operas, had the same qualities [as Napravnik]. He also belonged to that rare type of conductor whose sole ambition is to penetrate the spirit and the aim of the composer, and to submerge himself in the score.
