A Cathedral Precentor in St Michael's Church, Tenbury - the 1880's

His extempore organ and P. F. playing. He was about the best extemporiser of a fugue in England. When in a good vein his playing was absolutely magnificent. I remember particularly one extempore fugue played after the last service in summer Term at St. Michael's, I think either in '83 or '85, which was quite one of the most sublime things I ever heard; a fugue in which every variety of contrapuntal artifice was employed, followed by a Coda of extraordinary power — so, one would imagine, J. S. Bach played.
