Late in 1903 he [Ernest Hogan] produced and starred with his wife Mattie Wilkes in The Missionary Man, a "satirical exaggeration, in one act", which successfully toured a mainstream New England vaudeville circuit and received this review:
"Ernest Hogan, the 'Unbleached American'. made the greatest hit on the bill [...] When he got to singing the audience repeatedly recalled him and would not allow him to stop. When he invited the audience to join in a whistling chorus the gallery nearly blew the roof off [...]
