Never shall I forget a performance of Schumann’s E flat quartet that I heard there for the first time and the way they played the divinely tender Andante Cantabile !   I remember feeling as if the heavens had opened when, towards the end of the second movement, the tender, lovely theme returned, floating like a water-lily on the waves of surely one of the most perfect accompaniments with which a genius was ever inspired. One seemed to see two happy lovers united for ever, wandering through the fields of heaven; one seemed to hear the words, “And God shall wipe away all tears from their eyes, and there shall be no more death, neither sorrow nor crying, neither shall there be any more pain.”
