It was through this that I discovered the ‘New World’, a kind of Luna Park with many kinds of theatres.  A Javanese theatre with Arjuna and his white-faced clown attendants (whose origin is said to antecede the Hindu civilisation of Java), and a Chinese theatre.  I had never seen a Chinese theatre before.  The proscenium was very unprepossessing, and had illustrated advertisements for plumbing!  I was not very impressed with the performance of the actors, but the cymbal-player has always remained a vivid, I might say vibrant, memory.  How he crashed those brazen discs, with all his heart and soul; it is not only the sound that echoes in my ears, but the movement of the player as he gave every ounce of energy to his task.
