Sergei Prokofiev in Paris - 3 June, 1925, in the morning

from Sergey Prokofiev diaries: 3 June 1925, page 169:

Second rehearsal, a full one this time in the theatre foyer, which meant that everything was very loud. Some things sounded well, but most of it was unsatisfactory.

Koussevitzky does not know the tempi, neither am I absolutely sure of them. The result was more annoying than pleasurable. I shall not rush to embark on another piece as dense and unwieldy as this one: Dukelsky is right, one must write more simply and diatonically.
