Godfrey’s band was a new revelation to the musicians present. Here was a military band playing the overture to Der Freischutz, producing a softness and yet a power of tone from brass instruments such as all here were unaccustomed to, limning the grand work with all the nuances of expression, and presenting it from beginning to end with an intelligence and clearness of conception that seemed marvellous.
