Johann Heinrich Voss in Hamburg - 31 December, 1775
from Letter fron Johann Heinrich Voss to Ernestine Boie 5 January 1776, page 157:
Already the first accompanied recitative, "Tröstet, tröstet mein Volk" moved me to tears, and Fr. Winthem also sang it like an angel. But nothing could compare with the choruses. My heart beat almost as if in your embrace, and I would have liked to have flown through the clouds... But now, [it was] as if thunder and lightning came simultaneously, with the highest expression that is possible on earth: "Almighty God!" so that one starts, and wants to sink to the ground in the presence of the Most Sublime one.
