from Louis Spohr's Autobiography, page 189:

As at the time I made Beethoven’s acquaintance, he had already discontinued playing both in public, and at private parties; I had therefore but one opportunity to hear him, when I casually came to the rehearsal of a new Trio (D-Major 3/4 time) at Beethoven’s house. It was by no means an enjoyment; for in the first place the pianoforte was woefully out of tune, which however little troubled Beethoven, since he could hear nothing of it, and secondly, of the former so admired excellence of the virtuoso, scarcely any thing was left, in consequence of his total deafness.
