Lionel Tertis - early 20th Century

from My Viola and I: a complete autobiography / Lionel Tertis, page 39:

Ysaÿe was a glorious artist, with a tone of prodigious volume and inordinate technical powers. (…) I retain a vivid memory of his leading the most exciting performance of César Franck’s quintet I have ever known. He took the final at a terrific pace…inspiring, exhilarating, wonderful. Those who heard him only towards the end of his life know but the shadow of his art.
