When I had finished my speech [on his birthday on 29 December 1972], to my surprise the viola-players began the tune ‘Happy Birthday to you!’ and the audience sang this original and brainy composition with such fervour that I felt obliged to comment on their performance and blurted out: ‘Throughout the whole course of my long life I have never heard this difficult, intrincate chorale work more splendidly rendered!’
