Chopin in Dresden - August, 1829

from Selected Correspondance of Fryderyck Chopin, pages 31-32:

I have just come back from Faust. We had to be in the theatre-queue at half past four; the performance lasted from six till eleven. Devrient, whom I had already seen in Berlin, was Faust. They were celebrating Goethe's eightieth birthday. It is a frightening but powerful fantasy. During the entr'actes they played excerpts from Spohr's opera of the same name.
