My mother, Sofiya Vasilyevna, saw this and insisted that I begin learning the piano, but I hedged. In the Spring of 1915 I attended the theatre for the first time and saw The Legend of Tsar Saltan. I liked the opera, but it still wasn’t enough to overcome my unwillingness to study music.
