At the end of one of his [Sir Charles Halle] concerts the remarks overheard were not so often ' How splendidly Halle played,' or ' How wonderfully he conducted,' as ' How
beautiful was that sonata,' or ' How glorious that symphony ; ' and I think that was the highest tribute that could be paid him, and the one which his modest nature and single-minded devotion to his art most appreciated.
