26 January I did not wake up until nine o'clock, but Seryozha enjoyed hearing the innocent voices of the children going to school at seven. At ten we summoned Vasily Mitrofanovich and revealed our artful scheme: he was very near taking offence but was at least partly mollified by the second and third movements of the Rachmaninov Concerto and the whole of the Prokofiev Concerto. He was dubious about the work by Sergey Prokofiev, but was once again transported by that by Sergey Rachmaninov, and having been presented with a card bearing the somewhat barbed inscription, 'To his dear friend Vasily Mitrofanovich from the unhappy he tortured on 25 January 1913', sent us on our way with his blessing.
