It was November 11th when I went to "Pelléas et Mélisande " at the Opéra Comique and at the end of the first act a short, stout official in a tricolor sash suddenly marched onto the stage, positioned himself between the two principal singers and proceeded to harangue us in a fervent Gallic manner which I am afraid the English visitors found very hard to take.
