For a few months I saw much of him (Joseph Maas). He came to the Abbey at his own suggestion, and with the complete approval of the Dean (he was persona grata with the choir) took part in the memorial service to General Gordon, when [...] he sang with movingly beautiful effect, "Be thou faithful unto Death."
