Mr. E.H. Thorne in Ascot - late 19th Century

from Life and Reminiscences of Sir George J. Elvey, pages 281-282:

Twice on Sunday, in sunshine or rain, heat or cold, he never missed going to the little church to fulfil his labour of love, and many years he regularly attended the week-night choir practice. His pupil, Mr. E. H. Thorne, writes thus of the simple and touching little service : " I was much struck, a year or two since, when hearing him accompany a service in an iron church at Ascot, by the appropriateness of his accompaniments to the hymns, and by a charm in his playing peculiarly his own. Each hymn had its own proper tempo and expression."
