I went to the concert with a degree of anticipation, not having been to any concerts for some time, and I also hoped to see many of my friends. Quite a few of them were there although not, as a matter of fact, as many as I had been expecting. I sat with Nadya and Sonia Shtember, who invited me to call on them. Kokochka had gone to Moscow and they were lonely. Zakharov stumped noisily onto the platform and played the Bach-Busoni Fugue averagely well but never reaching the heights.
