Sergei Prokofiev in Rostov on Don - 23 July, 1914, in the morning
from Sergey Prokofiev diaries: 23 July 1914, pages 721-722:
We arrived in Rostov at eleven o'clock in the morning and once again found ourselves plunged into a seething cauldron of humanity. A monstrously long train carrying reservists to the front was now disgorging, now swallowing thousands of people, some being seen off by wailing womenfolk. Someone was playing a squeezebox, others were singing.
