I am very sorry we could not come to San Francisco. The concerts in Pasadena were such a wonderful time and the whole spirit which dominated everybody who was present was a great experience.

Letter from Arnold Schoenberg to Elizabeth Sprague Coolidge, Los Angeles, 3 August 1936. A series of chamber-music concerts had been given in Pasadena under Mrs. Coolidge’s aegis; the Kolisch Quartet had played Schoenberg’s earlier string quartets.
