Béla Bartók in Transylvania - in the middle of 1909

Since then, I’ve been roaming about; first in Budapest, then in Steiermark, and at present I’m doing collecting work in the Mezöség district. The Wallachian songs are the most exotic I’ve ever heard [excerpt of the melody]/ The many melismas are striking, I’ve heard real coloratura arias. This summer I’ve collected 25 Hungarian, 20 Slovak and 320 Romanian songs!
