In the evening I was with Coates, playing him and also singing the third act until all that was left of my voice was a croak. Coates was thrilled beyond measure at the General's sobbing, and himself sang after me: 'ee-ee-ee-ee-ya-a-a-a!' until he collapsed into giggles.
