Sergei Prokofiev - 21 October, 1916
from Sergey Prokofiev diaries: 23 October 1916, page 143:
The first rehearsal of The Gambler took place, eventually, on the 21st, in one of the inner rooms of the Mariinsky Theatre with a piano up on a platform. I sat at the piano and played, this time without singing a single word. The theatre's library had finally succeeded in producing lithographed vocal scores of the first and second acts, and the singers sat with them attempting (not always successfully) to sing along.
