Dmitri Shostakovich in Russia - 1946
from Dmitry Shostakovich-About Himself and His Times, page 121:
The Young Conductors Competition, which has just ended in Leningrad, has roused a good deal of public interest. / Most of the participants showed a fairly high level of understanding and decent technique, but not all of them properly understood the style and character of the works they performed, and not all, of course, displayed a real ability to work with an orchestra. / The competition highlighted several gifted conductors, and it is now up to the Arts Committee to take proper care of their futures.
