Sergei Prokofiev in New York City - 29 December, 1918, in the morning
from Sergey Prokofiev diaries: 16 [29] December 1918, pages 371-372:
I did not compose in the morning as I went to Altschuler's rehearsal, where Stahl's Verochka was singing Rimsky-Korsakov's song 'The Rose and the Nightingale' in my orchestration. I had made this version at her request a month or two ago, and the accompaniment was so simple that practically nothing had to be done. But when I heard it today it sounded so good it was pure delight. I am happy that I have made such a successful orchestral version of the song.
