I saw for the first time Pelléas et Mélisande in the production by 'our' Chicago Opera, currently on tour here at the Lexington Theatre. Pelléas absolutely enchanted me with the magical power of its poetic dream world. One is caught in its meshes as in a web, and transported who knows where. Is it good music? Perhaps. It has all the charm of understatement; an understatement at times so pronounced that to go beyond it would result in nothing at all.
