Vera Janacopulos's concert this afternoon. She sang Stravinsky's Pribaoutki. I was deeply interested n the performance and also quite exercised: how would the work sound, and how would the public react to it? The first number sounded so peculiar that in the box where I was sitting with Stahl and Fokine, although we had all resolved in advance to clap and sheer, we looked at one another and no one applauded. The audience, however, got the measure of it before we did: the clapping soon began, mixed with laughter, and success was immediately assured. I applauded for all I was worth and called for encores, shouting so loudly that people turned to look at me.
