Sergei Prokofiev in Bohemian Club, New York City - 2 February, 1920, at night
from Sergey Prokofiev diaries: 2 February 1920, page 470:
Our Zimro Ensemble then played the Brahms Clarinet Quintet, serious and boring music, a set of Variations by Gnessin, ditto, and my Overture. This sounded most attractive, occasionally a little strident (for the information of future performers, the clarinet should not force the tone and the piano should not be too percussive) that as an antidote to the inertness of the preceding corpses its freshness and vigour brought the audience back to life and provoked thunderous applause. The Overture had to be repeated, and I followed it with a performance of the Third Sonata.
