Next came Scythian Suite. I was passionately interested to hear it - my first time from the body of the hall*. Pretty good! In the first movement the first half sounded a trifle garish, resplendent all the same, and the second half was excellent. Koussevitzky dragged out the tempo rather too much, and the movement seemed over long, also he ended it 'with temperament' so the audience was not emboldened to applaud. The second movement had plenty of life, but alongside those sonorities that were successful were some that were insufficiently subtle, giving rise to a few places that sounded vulgar. There was much enthusiastic applause at the end of the second movement; Koussvitzky motioned towards my box, and I took several bows. 

The third movement, 'Night', lacked temperament, and some effects did not sound; I must look again at the way I have scored them. The audience's reaction to this movement was muted. In the fourth movement there are a few holes that will need filling, but all was triumphantly redeemed by the 'Procession of the Sun', which truly sounded overwhelming, especially the place that caused Glazunov to get up and walk out of the hall (the penultimate page).
