Next came Scythian Suite. I was passionately interested to hear it - my first time from the body of the hall*. Pretty good! In the first movement the first half sounded a trifle garish, resplendent all the same, and the second half was excellent. Koussevitzky dragged out the tempo rather too much, and the movement seemed over long, also he ended it 'with temperament' so the audience was not emboldened to applaud. The second movement had plenty of life, but alongside those sonorities that were successful were some that were insufficiently subtle, giving rise to a few places …   more >>
