Dmitri Shostakovich - the 1900's
from Dmitry Shostakovich-About Himself and His Times, page 317:
Often it happens that I am sitting listening to one of my own works, and I am aware that my ideas are falling on stony ground; at other times I feel that real contact has been made. It was very useful, by the way that I learned to play the piano and performed in public. It has been of enourmous benefit for my composition. It also made me aware of the audience, whom I always try to serve.
