Sergei Prokofiev in Chicago Opera - 3 December, 1921
from Sergey Prokofiev diaries: 3 December 1921, page 638:
At eleven o'clock there was a singer's rehearsal of Acts One and Two. I conducted, and Smallens accompanied. Relations between Smallens and me are now on a more civil, and correct, footing, because at one point earlier he was insolent to me and I checked him sharply. The singers know their parts well. But when, oh God, when, will we have any stage rehearsals? I am advised that I should have another word with Garden, but I do not want to importune her.
