In the evening I was at N.K.'s, who was very sympathetic and said she would help find another singer.* From her I went on to hear Stravinsky's Soldier's Tale, which was on at the Champs-Elysées. I found it less effective than the concert performance I had heard in the autumn. The staging kept getting in the way of the music, while the music slowed up the action. The passage where the devil declaims rhythmically to the music is marvellous. This is exactly what I have been thinking of.
