[…] the last time that I saw him [Ravel] at the house of some mutual acquaintances he played to us his latest Violin Sonata (minus a violinist) and made comments to me while he played the work. I have forgotten what the comments were, but even without them it would have been obvious to me that his style had materially changed. His work had become thinner in texture, so it seemed to me, and more discordant.
