Denis Matthews in London, England - 1947
from In Pursuit of Music, page 46:
I wrote, at the Academy, a Partita for wind-quintet, having been pressed to do something in this genre by Dennis Brain and his colleagues. But the war intervened, I never heard it played, and Dennis kept the score. Then, in 1947, they performed it for the City Music Society and invited me along. It was a strange sensation hearing a work of one’s own that one had practically forgotten, and they did it so well that I thought they must have rewritten it. They assured me they hadn’t.
