[Walter Susskind] was, at that time, the regular conductor of the Scottish Orchestra in Glasgow, where we were often to meet, and the thing that astonished me most about him was the absolute perfection of his own piano-playing.  I once stayed over purposely to hear him play chamber music with some of the Scottish players and particularly remember the immaculate way he negotiated the difficult passage-work in the Mozart Clarinet Trio.  How he managed to keep up his pianism I never understood, except that he once told me ‘I did practise very hard indeed – a long time ago!’
