Denis Matthews in Florence, Budapest - 1949
from In Pursuit of Music, page 123:
We … worked our way through Italy, spending consecutive nights in Bordighera, Genoa, Rapallo, Pisa, Florence, Padua and Venice, enjoying sunshine, architecture, painting, history, and wine. Even music: though the open-air performance of Rigoletto we heard in Florence had such an aura of improvisation about it that it reminded me of a shirt-sleeved Ninth Symphony I had heard in a Budapest bandstand before the war, in which the chorus gradually sauntered up one by one during the Adagio.
