The journey was memorable, for we had Kathleen Ferrier as a travelling-companion, Kathleen whom we knew and loved, now on her way with us to help disprove the notion that Britain was Das Land ohne Musik.  Those Viennese altos who were sceptical, or resented the intrusion, and attended the rehearsals of the St Matthew Passion and the B minor Mass in a carping spirit, either left the hall in a rage of envy at the divinely natural outpouring of her voice or remained to succumb to her personal charm.  So much has been written about Kathleen that my own memories will come as no surprise.  Having moved us all to tears in the wonderful aria Erbarme Dich she whispered to me ‘Was I on the note, love?’
