John George Keysler in Venice - May, 1730

from Travels through Germany, Bohemia, Switzerland, Italy and Lorrain. Vol. 4, page 22:

On Ascension-day in the afternoon, several hundreds of boats and gondola's may be seen rowing for wagers on the corso or canale di Murano. And their dexterity in keeping clear of each other, tacking about, &c. is very surprising. In most of the gondola's, on this day, there are masques and music; and there appears an universal emulation among them who shall divert themselves most.
