Mrs Turnbull in England - in the middle of the 1880's

from Reminiscences of a Stonemason, by a working man, page 215:

Two years flew past. I was well employed, and the two boys were in good health, and I now placed the eldest at school. He was put in the fourth standard, and soon was at home with the other boys, and his mother had the pleasure of seeing him on Sundays with a surplice, singing in the choir.
