“Stage fright” is quite a common thing with amateur aspirants.  One evening a young lady walked on to the stage, bowed to the audience, and walked off again in a desperate hurry.  I suppose the sea of faces bewildered her and made her voice sink into her boots.  On another occasion, a smart young fellow went on and began to sing a ditty, the first line of which was―”I am a young man from the country.”  He delivered the line right enough, but could go no further, his memory having completely deserted him.  In desperation he repeated the line, but stuck again.
