In the evening I went to the Bolms' recently staged ballet to music by the American composer Carpenter. It makes me feel angry that pieces with music resembling yesterday's leftovers can get produced, while my opera, a truly contemporary work, is left on the shelf and the composer has to expend all his energy and resources on squeezing out a crust of bread (even if spread with a bit of butter). |
