On one occasion I gave a grand sacred concert in the church with Mary Townley as soprano; Marianne Smith, contralto; William Dalmain, bass; and myself as tenor. We appeared in evening dress and white gloves.

The first item was a quartette, and the audience smiled at my grotesque appearance about the feet, for I had forgotten to buckle down my trousers, which were turned up to the calves of my legs. However, I put them right later and sang, “And God created man.” I must have been an oratoria [sic] singer that night.
