On the 13th I appeared again [in recital at the University of Chicago], this time with Koshetz in aid of famine victims in Russia. However, this event had been organised by Bolsheviks, and in the middle of it the opportunity was unfortunately taken for a political harangue. It was most disagreeable for politics to be brought in at all, and particularly so at the Bolsheviks' instigation, and I was afraid there might be trouble, but in the first place $2,000 was cpllected for the starving, and in second, we were each paid $400. I played Musorgsky and some of my own compositions; Koshetz was not in good voice and sang three of my songs no more brilliantly than she did the rest of her programme. The audience was mainly working class, and the oncert was successful, with curtain calls and encores.
