I had a distant memory of him [Stravinsky] from about nine years ago, when he used to turn up with other Korsakovian students at Rimsky-Korsakov's rehearsals; this was about the time when I myself was starting at the Conservatoire. Then I remember meeting him in the spring of 1910 at an evening of contemporary music at Apollon magazine, at which I played my Sonata Op. 1 and Stravinsky excerpts from The Firebird, which I did not like at all. We may have been introduced to one another that evening. Diaghilev even remembers that I was rude to Stravinsky, but I have absolutely no recollection of that. |
