In the afternoon I went to a symphony concert. Hertz, the conductor, a heavy man with a limp, still managed to direct impressively. After the concert I had dinner with him and then played chess with the leader of the orchestra, a passionate chess-player, while several people looked on reverentially. The game ended in a draw, but I was concentrating so hard I got a bad headache.
