Today is Yevdokia Silvestrovna's name day, so there were flowers, champagne and caviare. Even I was dragged into presenting her with flowers, even though my only relationship with her has been one of crossing swords. [Nadya] Planson was always asking me to play something for her, and as she is very nice, after lunch I sat down at the piano and began to play her the Second Piano Concerto, and before I knew what I was doing had played the whole of the first movement. After that, by popular request I played the other three movements. To my great surprise, the Concerto was a great success, and now everyone goes about humming the opening theme.
